The Rebel Soul
When Did You First Start Shrinking?
When Did You First Start Shrinking?
When Did You First Start Shrinking?
There wasn’t a single moment.
No dramatic scene.
No fire or thunder.
Just a slow, steady hollowing.
A sideways glance when you laughed too loud.
A correction when your opinion didn’t land right.
A warning disguised as kindness:
“Maybe don’t say that out loud.”
And you—brilliant, brave, wild thing—
you listened.
Because you were smart.
Because you were wired to survive.
Because you knew the cost of being “too much”
in a world that praises smallness in the name of politeness,
and obedience in the name of love.
So you dimmed.
You rounded off your edges.
You swallowed your fire.
And you called it growing up.
You called it maturity.
You thought: this is what it takes to belong.
But shrinking is not the same as belonging.
Betrayal of self is not the same as safety.
And performing someone else’s version of “acceptable”
is not the same as being loved.
⸻
I want to ask you something:
When did you first feel it?
That tug to make yourself smaller?
That moment when you realized
your truth had consequences?
For me, it wasn’t one memory.
It was a thousand tiny silences.
Things I didn’t say.
Things I stopped wanting.
Versions of myself I buried so I could be “good.”
But here’s what I’ve learned:
Every time I said yes to the box,
I was saying no to myself.
And that kind of no?
It leaves a mark.
⸻
We don’t talk enough about the cost of all that shrinking.
What it takes from your joy.
Your creativity.
Your connection to your body, your spirit, your voice.
What it does to your ability to trust yourself.
We talk about “burnout” like it’s a workplace condition,
but for some of us, the burnout is existential.
It’s what happens
when you spend your life being someone you’re not
because you were told that’s what’s required
to be safe, loved, accepted, human.
⸻
This isn’t a blame game.
This is about naming it.
And then choosing differently.
Because the unboxed life?
It starts here.
In the moment you finally say—
I want all of me back.
No more shrinking.
No more silence.
No more disappearing to make others comfortable.
You were never meant to be manageable.
You were meant to be free.
⸻
📣 Call to Action:
Tell me—when did you start shrinking?
And what part of you are you ready to reclaim?
